Grapeseed oil is an abundant byproduct of winemaking and is great for both dieters and cosmetics-lovers. It has a very high “steam” point, making it an excellent healthy alternative for fatty oils, and it’s full of antioxidants. Grapeseed oil is fabulous for dry and/or irritated skin, and it’s very light so it can be used on delicate areas of the face, such as under the eyes or on dry cheeks. It also helps prevent pores from clogging up, so it can be beneficial for oily skin as well—in fact it’s one of the few skincare oils that moisturizes any skin type without leaving a greasy residue, instead leaving skin soft and supple. It spreads very easily, so it’s probably not surprising that it’s commonly used as a massage lubricant, although you can find grapeseed oil in many beauty products such as shampoo, soap, facial wash, et cetera. Grapeseed oil is an all-around great oil and works well in homemade bath salts too! Keep an eye out for products using grapeseed oil when shopping for skincare supplies.
Notice: If licked/eaten, egg yolks run a risk of giving you salmonella poisoning. To best prevent this, do NOT eat with this mask on, and leave an inch of girth around your mouth. Keep your lips closed when applying this, and wash your hands immediately after. “Dairy fresh” eggs are the best for this because they rarely, if ever, carry salmonella; you can find these at some grocery and most health foods stores.
This mask is fabulous for people with cystic acne (basically acne that forms in the skin, not on top of it) or a lot of scarring/redness because egg yolks are full of vitamin A, but this is great for all skin types. Remember that not all masks are perfect for everyone and it may take a while to find one that works right for you. Egg yolk masks will leave your skin feeling extremely smooth and help to reduce irritation.
What you’ll need:
1 egg yolk
Directions:
Mix up the egg yolk in a bowl with a wire whisk or spoon until it reaches a smooth or “frothy” consistency. Using a little bit of egg at a time, dab it onto your face with your fingers or a cotton ball/pad until desired area is covered in a moderate-to-thin layer. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Chill skin with a cold washcloth to close pores. Pat dry.
Think you’re alone in having stretch marks? Think again: It is estimated that 70 percent of teenage girls will get stretch marks and more than 90 percent of women will get them at some point in their lives. In fact it’s entirely average for teenage girls who aren’t even close to overweight to get stretchmarks thanks to puberty, stress, hormones, and other environmental factors.
Girls aren’t alone in this, however—many guys who “shot up” (that is, grew very quickly during puberty) or even “shot out” get them too. Losing or gaining weight quickly can give stretch marks as well, which is why it’s important to eat healthy and, if you’re trying to lose weight, to do so the healthy way.
Stretch marks typically begin a dark purple/reddish color and gradually fade to a color slightly lighter or darker than your natural skin tone.
So how do you get rid of them? You might not like the answer… you really can’t without expensive and painful laser treatment. That’s why it’s important to understand that having them doesn’t make you weird or unattractive. Nobody in their right mind should care whether or not you have them. Do not let your stretch marks affect your self-confidence—stretch marks are a part of life. They’re probably there forever, so you have to learn to deal with them. However, there are two popular tricks you may try to make stretch marks less noticeable.
Cocoa butter is the most popular remedy for visible stretch marks. Just rub cocoa butter into the affected area as many times per day as needed. Cocoa butter softens up the skin, preventing additional tearing. Do not use cocoa butter in acne-prone areas as it will clog your pores.
The other common trick for hiding stretch marks is the use of spray on or sunless tanning lotions to “color in” the marks, making them blend in with the skin. With this method, stretch marks are all but invisible. However, keep in mind using a tanning bed or tanning naturally won’t do anything—stretch marks don’t tan well and stay lighter than your skin, which is why you need to use artificial spray to color them.
Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to prevent stretch marks—that is all to do with moisturizing. Again, cocoa butter is fantastic for this. It improves softness and elasticity of skin, making it less prone to tearing and irritation. You can also use a more mild lotion that is non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) instead.
1. Chew your food mindfully.
When was the last time you thought about how well you were chewing? Now… when was the last time you overate, felt a chunk of food have trouble going down, or felt a little queasy after a meal? “Chewing mindfully” just means pay attention while you eat. This is important because your stomach is a troll. Overeating occurs because it takes your stomach about 20 minutes to tell your brain is hungry. During that 20 minutes, you keep cramming food down that you don’t need. If you pay attention to how quickly & thoroughly you are chewing, you won’t overeat as much as before (which is a HUGE factor in weight gain).
2. Smaller plates=less food.
This one might sound stupid, but it works. If you’ve ever been in a situation where you felt obligated to eat all the food on your plate but you took too large a helping, you understand why. Just try it—don’t eat off of large plates anymore. If you have a problem indulging in ice cream or the like, get rid of your bowls too. Keep them in a bin in the garage or on the top shelf of your closet and only take them down when you have a meal in mind that needs them, like soup or pasta.
3. Have only one dedicated room for eating.
This one is easier said than done if you’re used to carrying food about the house with you. Just do it. You will notice a difference in your eating habits if you’re forced to sit down at the table every time you want a snack. This helps stop mindless eating which is very important to anyone who is trying to lose weight or simply stop bad eating habits.
4. Do not eat in front of the TV.
Don’t have a TV in your kitchen—if you do, use it only while you cook, not while you are eating. This goes for snacks and munchies, not just meals. Try as you may, TV is meant to be engrossing and distracting, and watching programs makes it very, very hard to pay attention to how much & how fast you are eating.
5. Don’t eat out of the container.
Straightforward: don’t eat the entire bag of doritos. Pour a serving on a plate and eat them slowly. If you’re still hungry 20 minutes after you’re done, grab something else to eat, and eat a reasonable amount. Wait 20 minutes. If you aren’t full by now, maybe it’s time to wait up until your next big meal, or make a nice fruit+milk+ice smoothie to sip on.
6. Don’t keep junk food in or around your house, office, car, etc..
This one is easy—just don’t buy it! Donate all your cruddy food to charity, or keep it on a high shelf for breakups/deaths with a note to remind yourself of your goal (whether it be losing weight, gaining weight, or just feeling better).
7. Do not overthink things if you mess up.
We all have moments of weakness, but that being said, try not to get carried away with “cheat days”. Some people say once a week is too much, and some say once a month is over-the-top. Set a limit for yourself, and record the last date you indulged on that note or on a sticky pad on your fridge, etc.. It might help you. And remember: just because you screwed up once, twice, a hundred times doesn’t mean it’s too late to get back into the groove of things. Do your best and forget the rest. :)
This is one of my favorite ways to get my skin looking a little nicer! It’s no “miracle cure” for blackheads/acne, but it’ll get that perpetual sheen off of your face in less than a minute.
What you’ll need:
1 tomato or 1-2 grape tomatoes
Washcloth
Face wash (any will do, use mild if you have sensitive skin.)
First, get your washcloth very warm and wet your face. Wash your face with your facial cleanser and rinse it off with warm water/washcloth. Then, cut your tomato(es) in half. Rub the juicy bit of the tomato all over your face. If part of your skin is very dry or you have rosacia, go around those parts. Leave the tomato juice on for 15-30 seconds. Rinse using warm water/washcloth, then wet your face with freezing cold water. The cold water tightens your pores, making them less prone to getting dirt/oil stuck in them again. Use moisturizer if needed. Ta da! You’ve learned a trick from the Philippines to clear up oil super fast.
Jasmine, like many of its flowery relatives, is great for the skin. It especially helps with dry skin but is good for all skin types. It’s also very stress-relieving and emotionally warming! It is said to help increase self-confidence, and it’s a known aphrodisiac, so you might have guessed that it makes a fantastic perfume. However, a little jasmine goes a long way as it’s a very strong scent. The flowers are commonly gathered in Egypt at night for the loveliest scent.
Drinking just one 330mL can of soda per day translates to a gain of 1 lb per month. Soda is dreadful for your teeth, and caffeinated sodas are addictive. A random study of 51,000 American women found that the women who drank one or more soda(s) per day gained more weight and were 83% more likely to develop type II diabetes.
If that wasn’t enough, soda is as acidic as vinegar and weakens the linings of the mouth and stomach, causing indigestion, gassiness, and bloating. The caffeine in soda makes you pee more frequently because it is a diuretic, as well as causing tension, irritability, and insomnia… and because soda is too sugary for your kidneys to handle, you become thirstier after drinking soda (to expel the sugar).
The healthiest alternative to soda is water. I like to keep a 24- or 48-pack of Wal-Mart bottled water in the garage and help myself whenever I’m thirsty. They tend to last me 1 and 2 weeks respectively.
Other more delicious alternatives include tea, which you can find certain flavors of to aid tension, ease stress, and generally make you feel better (or just taste good); and, of course, juice—the more natural the better, as artificial sweeteners aren’t very good for you.
Rosemary is an antiseptic oil that can relieve mild pain and assist in healing of wounds and scars. It regulates oil secretions, stimulates circulation, and encourages elimination of cellular wastes (dead skin).
It can be used to help treat acne, varicose veins, dermatitis, and cellulitis. It’s commonly used in anti-dandruff shampoo.
